Understanding Urges: How to Break Unhealthy Patterns

  • Recovery
  • Palm Beach Wellness Institute

By Karen Flannery, M.D.
Founder & Medical Director, Palm Beach Wellness Institute

We all experience moments when an old habit, emotional reaction, or familiar coping pattern feels difficult to resist. Whether it’s responding impulsively to stress, avoiding an uncomfortable situation, or falling back into behaviors we’re trying to change, these urges can feel automatic. But an urge is not the same thing as a decision. Just because a familiar response appears doesn’t mean we have to act on it.

Our brains develop patterns through repetition and experience. Over time, certain emotions, environments, and situations can trigger automatic responses, even when those responses no longer support our wellbeing.

Understanding these patterns is an important step toward making healthier, more intentional choices.

Understanding What Triggers Our Responses

Sometimes triggers are obvious. A stressful conversation might lead to frustration, or an overwhelming day might make us withdraw from others.

Other triggers are less noticeable.

Anxiety, loneliness, exhaustion, uncertainty, or feeling overwhelmed can activate familiar coping behaviors. Our brains remember what previously provided comfort or relief, even when those behaviors weren’t particularly helpful in the long term. Recognizing these connections allows us to better understand why we respond the way we do. It also highlights the importance of stress management and nervous system regulation. When we develop healthier ways to navigate uncomfortable emotions, we create more opportunities to respond rather than react.

Learning to Pause Before Reacting

One of the most valuable skills in changing unhealthy patterns is learning to notice an urge without immediately acting on it.

Consider asking yourself:

  • What am I feeling right now?
  • What happened immediately before this reaction?
  • Is this response helping me or simply familiar?
  • What might I need in this moment?

Mindfulness and emotional regulation techniques can help create space between an uncomfortable feeling and the behavior that follows. Over time, practicing this pause can strengthen self-awareness and make healthier responses feel more natural.

Building Healthier Coping Strategies

Changing an established pattern takes more than willpower. It helps to have practical strategies available before stressful situations arise. These might include taking a walk, practicing breathing exercises, connecting with someone supportive, getting adequate rest, or working with a therapist to better understand recurring emotional responses.

Different strategies work for different people. The goal isn’t to eliminate uncomfortable feelings, but to develop healthier ways of managing them. Small changes, practiced consistently, can gradually replace automatic reactions with more intentional choices.

Progress Comes from Awareness and Practice

Personal growth doesn’t mean never experiencing stress, frustration, or familiar urges again. It means becoming better equipped to recognize those experiences and respond in ways that support your health and wellbeing.

At Palm Beach Wellness Institute, we recognize that meaningful recovery and personal growth involve understanding emotional patterns, strengthening regulation skills, and developing healthier approaches to everyday challenges.

With the right tools and support, familiar patterns don’t have to determine what happens next.
